Dear Friend in Healthy Living,

We've officially entered the holiday season!

And while all the TV commercials, magazine articles, and cute pictures on Facebook and Pinterest tell us we should be celebrating, giving thanks, decorating our dining room tables and preparing beautiful, mouth-watering meals for friends and family, you may be experiencing something else entirely.

I know you're looking forward to all the excitement of the holidays, to spending time celebrating with your favorite people, but there's an undercurrent of concern as you anticipate the challenges you might face.

Do any of the following sound familiar?

You absolutely love the holiday season, but worry about...

  • the ups and downs of trying to lose or maintain your weight during the holidays. You've read tons of articles and advice columns about staying healthy for the holidays, but you don't know which tips work or how to apply them if something unexpected comes up. It all feels so complicated, and it's overwhelming.
  • the vast array of sweets, salty appetizers and fattening main dishes you're inevitably going to encounter. You sometimes feel out of control, have trouble saying no, and often end up feeling guilty if you overeat.
  • the hustle and bustle of holiday parties, cookie exchanges, mailing holiday cards and packages, shopping, wrapping (the list goes on). It's exhausting! You're so busy, you sometimes end up eating junk food on the run or skipping meals and end up feeling sluggish and crabby.
  • the deprivation and disappointment. You don't want to have to skip out on everything others get to indulge in, and you don't want to be disappointed with yourself if you DO indulge. You don't want to feel guilty about your pleasures, and you don't want to abandon your health. And, you're tired of feeling like it has to be one way or the other.

If any of this resonates with you, I have great news:

You're in exactly the right place. And I want you to know, you're not alone.

Beautiful-girl-with-ChristmasOn average, Americans gain 5-8 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. (I know! It’s a shocking statistic – but not hard to believe when "tradition" is often steeped in butter cookies and honey ham, in hot cocoa and buttered rum!)

According to the American Psychological Association, "Holiday stress has a particular impact on women, who take charge of many of the holiday celebrations, particularly the tasks related to preparing meals and decorating the home… they have a harder time relaxing during the holidays and are more likely to fall into negative habits to manage their stress, like comfort eating."

It's not your fault. We often do things simply because we've always done them this way. When it comes to the holidays, we're used to overindulging in foods that are packed with sugar, salt and fat… those foods that are designed to be irresistible.

It doesn't have to be this way. It's time for new traditions – traditions that are good for you and that are worth passing down.

If you’re like so many of the people I care for,

you put yourself last, most of the time.

You may not even realize you're stuck in this pattern, but take a moment to think about it. Whether you're shuttling kids from school to activities, or organizing a casserole parade for a friend who just had surgery, or organizing the family BINGO night for your daughter's preschool, your needs come last. You neglect yourself. And when you do, your health and well-being suffer.

You feel like the struggle to lose weight is constant … and although you've tried lots of different things, you can’t figure out why nothing works.

It's time to discover that you can be happy AND healthy.

happy-confident-holiday-womanHow? By creating a scientifically sound and sensible plan you can follow, even when your life is at its most exciting, busy and demanding.

When you do, you feel calm and centered. You feel in control. You're able to choose for yourself. You're able to begin new traditions that are healthy AND just as enjoyable as the old ones. And you pass on the sense of love and family you so want to convey.

You enjoy the holiday season, and you emerge on the other side exactly as you want to – happy, healthy, confident… and feeling GREAT, to begin your New Year.

Right now, it may seem difficult, if not impossible. But I'm going to show you that it's not. In fact, with the right tools and strategies, it's more than possible – it's the key to surviving and enjoying the holiday season.

Before I explain, I'd like to tell you a bit more about who I am and how I can help you.

gail-smallI'm Gail Altschuler, MD, Founder and Medical Director of the Altschuler Center for Weight Loss & Wellness. I've been a family practice doctor for the past 30 years, and a weight loss specialist for the past 10.

It's important for you to know that I've been in your shoes. More than a decade ago, I began gaining weight. I was a family practice doctor who worked long hours under a lot of stress. I simply wasn't paying attention to my weight, and things kind of “snowballed.”

I remember looking at my BMI (body mass index) chart and thinking, "I'm not obese!" And yet, the numbers certainly don’t lie.

My weight increased. I knew that soon I would be up to 180 pounds, and maybe then 200. I was scared.

So I tried everything … all the stuff that used to work: Diets. Exercise. Cutting carbs.

But NOTHING worked.

I really felt sad. I was hurting myself and couldn't stop. I was hungry all the time.

That's when I finally decided to take action. I began to study, to look for effective, healthy ways to lose weight. I went to a training through the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, a group that trains physicians to help people lose weight, sets a high standard of care and acts as a resource where doctors can learn from one another.

I came home from that training and tried what I had learned.

It worked. I wasn't hungry and I started losing weight.

So I am the first patient! I've done everything you've done. I know what it takes to gain weight, to feel out of control, sad and stressed. I also know what it takes to lose that weight - and keep it off. I lost 50 pounds, and have kept it off for 10 years now!

So I began offering weight loss, at first one half day, then two, while still running a busy family practice. And I found that people were losing weight, and feeling better than they had in years.

As a doctor, I was so much happier helping my patients lose weight than I was treating illnesses that, in fact, had resulted from an overeating lifestyle. Then it dawned on me: Weight loss is the best of primary care.

I became a doctor to help people stay healthy and be happy.

But generally speaking, as people age, we treat symptoms, instead of causes. We treat everything from high blood pressure to high cholesterol, from back pain to knee pain, from diabetes to depression.

Yet losing just 10 percent of your weight is the single most effective thing you can do to improve your health!

I had a new perspective. A new driving question.

What if we could create a new community where being healthy is the norm, and where people can be healthy AND happy?

logo-highresAnd thus, The Altschuler Center for Weight Loss & Wellness was born.

And now, I help people get off medications, get educated, get healthy, prevent illness, eat well, set goals and overcome obstacles.

Yes, even during the holidays!

Introducing …

The Holiday Survival Virtual Retreat

… a brand-new virtual retreat designed to help you navigate the holiday festivities without stress or guilt … so you can actually ENJOY them!

Live Event Is Over ~ Complete Event Recordings Available in Membership Area

This retreat is unique in that it covers specific celebrations, challenges and scenarios you'll encounter during this season – and real solutions to each of them. It happens virtually, all in one day, AND you can conveniently attend online. In addition to the trainings, you'll have plenty of time for coaching and Q&A. The result: You leave inspired with a plan for enjoying the holidays without weight gain or undue stress.

Before I give you the details, let me tell you a little bit about what this Retreat is NOT:

  • It's not a ton of new information I expect you to sort through. You need clarity, brevity, and levity. I'll give you exactly what you need to create a plan for navigating the holidays – and any situation – simply.
  • It’s NOT a lecture. Although I'm providing you with some GREAT, powerful information, I'm also leaving plenty of time for questions and interaction, so you can personalize your journey and make my plans work in your life.
  • It's not about depriving yourself. There IS a way to balance structured under-eating (careful eating all the time) and indulgences where appropriate … without undermining your goals.

With all that being said, here is just a taste of what you'll learn during The Holiday Survival Virtual Retreat:

Part 1: The Basics to Optimize Your Health

To begin, you must gain a solid understanding of how your body works, and which components must come together to optimize your health.  This knowledge will act as your guide at decision-time.  We will set the foundation for navigating through the holidays without compromising your health or your sanity.

You will learn:

  • My simple approach to maintain your weight without compromising your enjoyment.
  • My POWER system for ensuring your basic physical and mental health needs are met, every day.
  • Typical holiday scenarios and how they wreak havoc on your health and wellness.
  • THE best and most powerful question to ask yourself to guide your choices.
  • And more.

Part 2: Be Merry and Mindful

Because this IS such a busy time of year, you often get out of your routine and face a very real set of challenges you may not face during the rest of the year. It’s so easy for new situations to crop up and throw you off, even if you’ve been careful about following your plan. Here, you discover how to anticipate these challenging situations and build strategies for getting through them, without feeling stress or being deprived!

You will learn:

  • How to set healthy limits and boundaries – associated with time, money, family, and expectations – in a way that feels good.
  • The psychology behind common setbacks, and how to use this knowledge to keep moving forward.
  • How to bring the social, psychological, and emotional aspects of your being into balance – and keep them there – during the holiday season and year-round.
  • And more.

Part 3: Nuts and Bolts Strategies to Create New Traditions

It’s time for strategy, and implementation! This is where you learn exactly what to do, when, to get and stay healthy throughout the holidays and well into the future. You get practical, proven tools for making healthy choices that will become your new natural habits.

You will learn:

  • How to say good-bye to traditions that don’t serve you and that aren't worth passing along, and how to create new ones that are.
  • How to plan meals that are delicious and healthy so you don't feel deprived.
  • How to indulge - at the right time, in the right quantity.
  • Examples of expressions of love that AREN'T food-related, so you can give to your loved ones without affecting their health, inadvertently.
  • And more.

In short, you learn exactly what you need to know—and nothing more—to enjoy this holiday season (and the next, and the next, and so on!) without the guilt, stress, or worry … and with new, healthy traditions.

You get easy, simple, clear instruction and fast results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is your program different from other programs?

A: This retreat is unique in that it provides a comprehensive look at the challenges – physical, social and emotional – we run into during the holidays … as well as strategies and tools that are practical and proven. You get all of this in one day, virtually – so it's simple and easy to implement right away. The community component is unique as well, in that you get to interact with people who are traveling a similar journey, making similar choices, and supporting you. That can make ALL the difference for some – you really aren’t alone!

Q: I love sweets. Are you going to tell me I have to give them up completely?

A: Absolutely not. This is not about deprivation. It's about learning when to indulge and in what quantity, as well as how to create new traditions for enjoying the holidays.

Q: I don't have time for this. How can I justify this time investment for this Retreat when I'm so busy during the holidays?

A: If you're like so many of the people I care for, you spend so much time caring for everyone else that you don't take time for yourself. Make yourself a priority. Your other obligations can wait for one day, I promise you! And if you can't attend live, don't worry – you'll receive all the recordings as soon as the retreat ends.

Q: My lifestyle is so busy! Are your plans, strategies and recipes time-consuming?

A: I can help you create a plan based on what works for you. If your lifestyle is consistently busy, I can help you find healthy foods and make healthy choices so you can lose weight (or maintain your current weight) without feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
